Ride For Sight 2015

January 8th, 2015 @

With four successful years behind us, we are once again ready for our fifth Ride for Sight Charity Bike-a-thon! For 2015, we have been blessed to have the partnership and support of G-Club Penang Cyclist and Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (MPPP) with us again. The theme for 2015 is “Life@Max”.

In order to make this fifth edition a special and memorable one we are having our Ride for Sight in conjunction with earth hour 2015. RFS stands for equal opportunities for BVI and their sighted peers, so that they can be living their life@max as well for nurturing Mother Nature. Therefore we thought this fifth anniversary a good opportunity to partner with the earth hour from Queensbay Mall to show everyone that two causes can go hand-in-hand. This also means that this year’s ride will not be in the morning but in the evening! We will have an exciting programme at Queensbay mall which include performances and our well known lucky draw with the flag-off of our “Ride for Sight” at the start of earth hour, which is at 8.30pm.

The ride will be held on the 28th of March 2015 (Saturday) at Queensbay Mall  from 6.00pm to 9.30pm

We have set a target of 1,000 participants for Ride for Sight 2015 and aim to raise at least RM 100,000.00 nett  from the event. Participation fee is set at RM50 per person. Participants will receive a registration kit which includes a t-shirt and a lucky draw coupon.

SNH Carnival 2014

June 28th, 2014 @

St. Nicholas’ Home is proud to once again hold the 2014 edition of St. Nicholas’ Home Carnival on 6 September 2014, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.at our premises. As always, we are grateful that caring Malaysians, communities and kind hearts out there have rendered admirable support to our cause all these years. The Home’s food carnival has become a key component in our annual fund-raising strategy because of encouraging participation from the public.

We hope that we will be blessed to have the support from all of you. There are four ways you can help make this carnival a roaring success and eventually bring blessings to our blind ones:

  • Buy our carnival coupons (RM20 each),
  • Promote our carnival coupons to your friends and family,
  • Set up your own food stall on carnival day. Come join the fun!
  • Or sponsor a food stall at RM500.

This is a charity event and all proceeds from sales at the carnival will go towards sustaining our programmes to serve the blind better. Coming together at the carnival for an act of charity is certainly the highlight. Coming together will also raise awareness among participants on the various needs of the sight-challenged community and promote civic consciousness. Coming together in the Malaysian muhibbah spirit will be good fun for all involved too.

For more information on the carnival or how to get the coupons, please call 04 – 2290800 or email us at info@snh.org.my .

Ride For Sight 2014 ~ Register NOW!!!

December 20th, 2013 @

We ARE BACK with the fourth edition of “Ride for Sight” to be held on 13th April 2014 at Straits Quay once again. We are planning a more challenging route of 25 km approximately that runs through some of the most scenic part of Georgetown. We are aiming to have, 1500 cyclists participating in RFS 2014, as against last year’s 1200. The theme for 2014 is “Step Up — Be the difference”.

This year, we want everyone to step up to the challenge of riding for and with the blind and visually impaired. We want the community to join us in our efforts to break free from the general perception that the blind are incapable of succeeding in life. Through the ride, we want the community to step up in assisting us in providing a platform for the BVI trainees to step up for their rights to be treated as equal as their sighted peers.

Registration for Ride for Sight 2014 will starts from 2 January 2014 until 20 March 2014. With the increase popularity of Ride for Sight, we do expect registration to be brisk so please register early to avoid disappointment.

We encourage more of our VI friends from all over Malaysia to come and join us for this incredible event for free! With your participation, we can demonstrate to all that with a little help, vision impairment is not a barrier to living life to the fullest. Please contact our office directly for more details on VI participation.

Let’s show Malaysia and the world what can be achieved when people who cares, be it from the community, corporate citizens, local and state government, come together in partnership to build a more inclusive and caring society. Let’s change the outdated mindset that vision-impaired are less than capable and somehow do not deserve the expectation to be successful. Let’s look at our vision-impaired friends and see them as equal participant and contributor in our community. Let’s STEP UP and be the catalyst for change; let’s BE THE DIFFERENCE!

SNH Carnival 2013

July 19th, 2013 @

St. Nicholas’ Home, Penang is organizing the annual SNH Carnival for the second time around. These are the details of the charity event:

Day and Date: 7th September 2013 (Saturday)

Time: 10.00 am to 3.00 pm

Venue: St Nicholas’ Home, No 4, Jalan Bagan Jermal, 10250 Penang (Enter through Persiaran Midlands)

With around 70 stalls, the carnival will feature various types of delectable local food, delightful arts and handicrafts, fun and educational games and great entertainment. Massage services will also be offered by our very own St. Nicholas’ Home Wellness Centre. We will also have blind awareness stalls, where people can learn about and experience blindness, low vision and braille.

There is something for everyone to enjoy while spending fun and quality time with their family. The children will have a fun time with Mr. Bean the clown entertaining them with stories, magic show and balloon animals. There are also other fantastic performances while people are enjoying the food and activities.

St Nicholas’ Home is a premier institution that serves the blind and visually impaired in Malaysia. Established as an orphanage in 1926, the home has since grown to become a fully residential training centre. Besides providing training in massage therapy, basket-weaving, pastry-making and IT, the home also provides counselling and interventional services for individuals suffering from imminent blindness. St Nicholas’ Home is also the only institution that serves children with multiple disabilities and senior citizens with visual impairment. And soon, we will have a TASKA for BVI children in Penang!

Over the decades, the home has been able to provide its services free of charge, thanks to the generous contributions from organizations and individuals. The home relies heavily on donations, sponsorships and revenue generated from charity events. All proceeds from this carnival will be channelled towards creating awareness as well as our educational and skills training programs that would benefit our trainees directly.

We appeal to the individuals and organisations to support us by buying our coupons priced at RM20 per booklet or set up a stall at the carnival. If you are unable to operate the stall on the day, you can sponsor one at RM500.  Donations towards the cost of the Carnival are also welcomed and tax-exemption receipt will be issued. We hope to raise RM100,000 after expenses from the Carnival this year.

We expect to welcome 3000 people at our Carnival, joining hands with us in our effort to serve and support our blind and visually impaired friends.

For those who are coming, please be informed that these are the places for parking your vehicles:

- Gottlieb Road market (Junction of Gottlieb Road and Burma Road)

- Persatuan Murid-murid Sekolah Perempuan Cina (Jalan Bagan Jermal, opposite St. Nicholas’ Home)

- Indian Association (Jalan Bagan Jermal)

- Le Ann Maxima (Jalan Bagan Jermal)

The St. Nicholas’ Home Carnival banners will be hung at these places.

Coupons for the carnival are available at St. Nicholas’ Home. Enquiries on the coupon and stall can be made by phone at 04-2290800 or via info@snh.org.my.

Ride for Sight 2013

December 28th, 2012 @

Riding for the right to choose!

This year’s Ride for Sight (RFS), the annual charity bike – a – thon jointly organised by St. Nicholas’ Home Penang and the G – Club Penang Cyclist, saw 26 blind and visually impaired (BVI) trainees on tandem bicycles, accompanied by 1200 enthusiastic cyclists from all over Malaysia cycling for an important cause. With the sole purpose of raising awareness and opening the eyes of the public to the rights of the blind and visually impaired community, the cyclists started their 20km journey from Straits Quay, riding all the way to and through the Penang Heritage area, before heading back to Straits Quay.

The previous two Ride for Sight events were so successful and made such huge impacts as it served as a clarion call for the blind and visually impaired to lead a life of independence without any restrictions. The BVI community are more often than not pigeon-holed and faced with barriers that are typically an outcome of low expectations from people who have a poor understanding of the abilities of the blind. Therefore, events such as Ride for Sight provide the perfect avenue for the BVI community to champion for their rights.

This year’s event saw SNH exceed its expected number of registrations, with more than 1200 participants taking part in this unique ride! With generous sponsor such as BSG Property leading the charge in making this event a rousing success, SNH also managed to raise more than RM150, 000 because of all our generous supporters! BSG Property has long been a strong supporter of St. Nicholas’ Home Penang and when approached to be the main sponsor, they came on board with full force.

Many other corporate Samaritans such as Sunway Grand Sdn Bhd, Fastron Sdn Bhd, Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd, Fairchild Semiconductor (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and L’occitaine En Provence (Malaysia) also contributed a significant amount of cash in support of the event. For the second consecutive year, Giant Bicycles also returned with a exceedingly generous sponsorship of 5 new bicycles for the main Lucky Draw. A folding bicycle contributed by the Lions Club of Penang Komtar is another main lucky draw attractions.

To add some glamour to the event, Amee Philips Exclusive Jewellery came in with an award winning necklace to get the ladies excited. Various hotels, restaurants and beverage companies such as Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Lone Pine Hotel, G – Hotel, Equatorial Hotel, Cititel, McDonald’s Malaysia, The Delicious Group Sdn Bhd, Keluarga Utama Sdn Bhd and 100Plus showed their support towards the event by contributing vouchers and beverages for this year’s RFS 2013.

The overwhelming response of this year’s RFS can also be attributed to the efforts and contribution of FTG Media, Impress LED Advertise Sdn Bhd and Yes Media for their free promotional advertising and to the extensive coverage by the various members of the press. After last year’s success, Straits Quay also returned as the venue sponsor.

Various other entities such as BP Healthcare Group and Shoes Two Point Zero came in as first time sponsors to help make this event merrier. With the support of Metrobikes and their sponsorship of rental bicycles, many of the participants who were first time cyclists had the opportunity to join in on this meaningful ride. All proceeds from the rental charge were donated entirely to the event.

The encouraging response and continued support given to Ride for Sight 2013 shows that there is increased awareness among the public of the plight of the BVI community. This is indeed a positive step towards achieving the dream of equality for the BVI community and towards exercising the rights of the BVIs to choose an active lifestyle.
