Basketry Centre

At the Basketry Centre, the trainees will learn how to use and weave rattan into different types of basket of different sizes. They would be taught the different techniques of weaving, from learning to weave smaller baskets such as pencil holders to bigger baskets such as clothing baskets and toy baskets. The trainees will also learn how to market their baskets, especially when they are invited for demonstrations and festivals such as the Georgetown Festival.  When the course is completed, the trainees can decide to either work at the St. Nicholas’ basketry department or start their own business.

 This is a brief course outline:

Level 1

In Level 1, they will learn Manual Dexterity Skills. They will learn to weave basic baskets like pencil holders, wallets and others. This course will take 6 months.

Level 2

In level 2, they will learn how to weave different types of baskets that are bigger in size. This course will take 6 months.

Level 3

In level 3, the trainees will learn to weave coloured baskets. This course will take 6 months.

The course duration is from January to June as well as from July to December.
