St. Nicholas’ Home Charity Fun Ride 2022

The anticipation was finally over for the cycling fans in Penang island. The return of our annual charity cycling event, Charity Fun Ride 2022 on 27 August 2022, Saturday has brought cheers to lots of two-wheeled participants. The event was flagged-off by the Home’s General Manager, Ms. Carmen Chew at 8 a.m. from St. Nicholas’ Home with a 11km delightful cycling routes around Gurney, Tanjung Tokong and Tanjung Bungah making a pit stop at Straits Quay before ending its final route back to St. Nicholas’ Home again. It was participated by 120 individual and tandem cyclists from all walks of life, mostly wearing T-shirts sponsored by Plexus Plexus Corp.

This event was held in conjunction with the Merdeka month in August, differs slightly from the past events which were usually in March. Besides raising funds for the Home, the event hopes to encourage the public to participate in recreational cycling activities with the blind and vision impaired (BVI) tandem riders. The tandem bicycle has 2 seats and 2 bicycle pedals. A sighted pilot will be on the front seat guiding the BVI rider seated behind the pilot pedaling synchronously. During the ride, our volunteer pilots would describe the surroundings/sceneries to their BVI riders along the way. Also seen were some individual sighted cyclists cheering encouragement words to the BVI tandem riders.

The event ended more than 2 hours later and many enjoyed it. We were so honoured to have the ADUN of Pulau Tikus, YB Chris Lee Chun Kit to greet all the participants and close the event’s ceremony at 10.30 a.m. The participants were served with the irresistible McChicken burgers proudly sponsored by McDonald’s Malaysia. They also brought home 2 group photos taken at Straits Quay fountain and St. Nicholas’ Home as some of their valuable charity memento collections. All of the contributed proceeds will help to sustain various programmes and services in St. Nicholas’ Home.

Our heartfelt thanks to YB Chris, Plexus Plexus Corp. , McDonald’s, donors, sponsors, volunteers, participants, organizing committee members, and local authorities for making this event a success.
