Empower independent living
This training is provided to the BVI ranging from 16 years old until 60 years old. The rehabilitation training is mostly 6 months duration meanwhile based on individual’s performance as well.
The training covers:
- Orientation & Mobility
- This is the course which focuses on the individuals who are blind or visually-impaired to travel through their environment in safe and effective way. This course includes:
a) Orientations skill
b) Mobility skill
c) Basic sighted guide technique
d) White cane technique
2. Daily Living Skills
- Daily Living Skills teach the blind to be independent in daily living activities. Courses included are as following:
a) Personal care and grooming
b) House chores
c) Kitchen activities
d) Social/moral value activities
e) Personal financial management
3. Basic Braille
- Braille is the writing language for the blind in which characters are represented by pattern of raised dots. Trainees will learn how to use a brailler machine to write braille words and how to read braille words. For beginners, they will learn basic braille such as alphabets, symbols, numbers and simple words. Grade 2 braille which is on contraction (short form of words) will be taught too. The lesson will be taught 3 times per week.
The SDC also provides “Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)” on home-based training to senior citizens. This CBR is based on the needs of an individual and the whole course is 6 months in duration.
